Let’s walk through exactly what you need to do to get your baby a US passport.
Why Baby Passports Are a Bit Different
The USA IDs for children under 16 are lawful for only 5 years, associated to 10 years for children. This means your child may go through multiple passports before turning 16 especially if you start applying at a young age. That’s because passport photos quickly become outdated as your child grows. It’s not unusual for border agents to compare a toddler’s face to a photo taken when they were just a few months old so frequent renewals make sense!
Step-by-Step Process to Get a Passport for Your Baby
1. Fill Out Form DS-11
You must complete Form DS-11, the official passport application for first-time applicants and children under 16.
You can fill it out online and print it, or download the PDF and complete it by hand.
Do not sign the form until you are tutored to do so by a passport taking agent in person.
2. Prove U.S. Citizenship
You must submit innovative or specialized copies (not photocopies) of one of the following to demonstrate your child’s USA nationality:
A full-valid, undamaged U.S. passport (even if expired)
A U.S. birth certificate that includes:
The full name.
Parents’ full names.
Filing date with the registrar’s office.
The registrar’s autograph.
The official seal of the issuing authority.
A Consular Report of Birth Abroad.
A Certificate of Citizenship.
If you can’t provide one of these, there are secondary options, but they are more complex and may require additional documentation.
