Since 1986, Emperor Specialty Foods Ltd has specialized in importing premium gourmet foods. Initially focusing on fresh shiitake mushrooms, the company expanded in 1995 to include mushrooms from China and other local sources. By 1998, they were the first Canadian company to regularly import fresh mushrooms from China via ocean shipment, helping them extend their distribution network. In 2001, they opened an office in China to further diversify their offerings, including imported fruits and vegetables, while continuing to produce organic shiitake mushrooms in Vancouver.
